Have you ever heard of the sand pyramids in Bosnia and Herzegovina? Sand pyramids are usually associated with America, but this incredible natural phenomenon also exists near the town of Foča in eastern Bosnia.
These beautiful pyramids are densely packed together and can reach heights of up to 20 meters. They are truly breathtaking. This unique geomorphological phenomenon has been formed over many years. Figures of interesting shapes have been created through the erosion of the soil under the aggressive influence of frost, summer heat, rain, and strong winds. In terms of their shape and composition, they resemble pyramids in Colorado (USA), the Dolomites (Italy), the Valcea region in Romania, or the pyramids in Devil’s Town (Serbia).

These sand pyramids were first mentioned during the Austo-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina (late 19th, early 20th century). The erosion process continues today, so they are not disappearing but rather growing. Grooved sand columns rise from their wide bases and narrow towards the top, creating an extraordinary geomorphological rarity in this area.
The pyramids are located 9 kilometers from the town of Foča, in a place called Pirin Do. Many refer to the Sand Pyramids near Foča as the “Bosnian Colorado” because they resemble those in Colorado, USA. However, it’s difficult to compare them as they differ in size and composition. What further distinguishes them and makes them more attractive is the surrounding greenery. If you climb the sand pyramids and look around, the endless greenery, magical plateaus, and mountain peaks will leave you breathless.
